Aquarium of the Bay Reduces their plastic footprint in a variety of ways:
- Encouraging all staff to follow Zero Waste principles
- Requiring that events held there abide by Zero Waste guidelines
- Recycling much of the plastic packaging they receive in retail shipments
- In 2015, Aquarium of the Bay recycled about 4 cubic yards of film plastic, which means that about two standard pickup truck beds worth of plastic is not infinitely sitting in the landfill.
Aquarium of the Bay naturalists share the importance of reducing waste and keeping it from blowing or washing out to sea. Large public coastal cleanups are organized four times a year. In 2015, working with a number of partner organizations and about 200 volunteers, 600 pounds of debris from Aquatic Park was removed. Most of the debris was small plastic items like straws, cigarettes (which contain plastic filters), and food wrappers.
